Christensen farm has been farmed since 1902 by members of the Christensen family. We bought this farm from my husband's Aunts in 1999. The majority of the farm remains in dry land farming which is done by other relatives. We planted 60 chestnut trees on one acre in 2000. We cleared the blackberries, cleaned up thistle infested fields and worked on rodent control. Most of this was done by mechanical means--digging out the root balls of blackberries and thistles and trapping rodents.

The chestnut orchard is grazed by guard geese. This significantly minimizes the need to mow the the field. The permanent cover crop on the orchard floor reduces erosion as we are on slight slope.

We do not irrigate our trees so our harvest is somewhat dependent on the weather. We harvest by hand daily once he nuts start dropping. We wash and sanatize the nuts, heat process then rapidly cool them to retard fungal growth. The nuts are then refrigerated until sold. Our small nuts get dried and shelled for our own consumption and Cynthia's home brewing. Our culls end up as squirrel treats.
